Non-profit Embezzlement Investigation Underway

By G.T. Houts
Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Crestline, CA – The former chief administrative officer of a non-profit organization based in Crestline is a person of interest in the reported embezzlement of an undisclosed amount of funds.

Detective Michael Pelkey of the Twin Peaks Sheriff's Station told RIMOFTHEWORLD.net an investigation is underway, but that no one has been formally charged with embezzling funds from the Mountain Communities Boys & Girls Club (MCBGC).

"This is an ongoing investigation," Pelkey explained, "and we're not ready to release any details except to say the case was filed with the District Attorney today (October 15)."

However, on Wednesday, October 1, a media summary issued by the Twin Peaks Sheriff's Station showed a call to the 600 block of Forest Shade Road in Crestline at 11:10 a.m. to gather information about the possible embezzlement of $43,000 in funds from the non-profit organization.

Detective Pelkey declined to confirm the amount in the case but did say that $43,000 was an incorrect amount.

The media report also did not name the former employee, however RIMOFTHEWORLD.net is aware of the person of interest in the case who has been identified by authorities as 60-year-old Audella Cook. Cook, who served as chief professional officer since June 2006, left the organization last month.

RIMOFTHEWORLD.net contacted Boys & Girls Club President Steve Lombard for comment about the investigation into the possible embezzlement of funds from the organization.

"At this point this is a personnel matter and we're not at liberty to discuss the case," Lombard explained about the pending legal filing.

MCBGC currently serves about 100 children a day in programs at its Crestline headquarters, Lake Arrowhead Elementary, and Lake Gregory Elementary locations. Various programs are offered including a breakfast program, after school education and enrichment programs, as well as afternoon snacks and an older youth program.

The local Boys & Girls Club received its charter in June 1995.
