Be Prepared for Winter: Installing Chains

Class Taught On Proper Installation Techniques

By Michael P. Neufeld
Saturday, November 15, 2008

Crestline, CA – "Practice installing your chains or cables and check for the proper fit before the actual need arises," Ron Albright told about 20 people who gathered at Lake Gregory Regional Park for a seminar on chain and cable installation.

Albright, who was assisted by Oscar Tamayo from Lake Arrowhead, actually put chains on a tire during the 45-minute hands-on class and showed all in attendance how to make sure the chains were tight enough to increase traction and add to the lifespan of the chains or cables.

"If you hear banging," Albright cautioned, "stop immediately and check it out to avoid damage to your vehicle and/or chains."

Albright recommended replacing chains or cables every other year or so. "Keep the old ones as spares," he advised, "and go to the hardware or auto parts store and get a couple of extra links so you'll have them should one break or wear out."

While Albright took an actual tire and installed chains, Tamayo offered helpful hints for the several people who had cables. He reminded everyone to be careful to make sure the cables were installed properly in order to reduce the possibility of tire damage.

"For maximum traction," Albright explained, "all four tires should be chained up. However, most people purchase only one pair of chains. If this is the case, consult the vehicle owner's manual (particularly for all-wheel-drive vehicles). Generally, the single pair of chains should be installed on the drive wheels. This helps steering in front-wheel-drive cars but can allow the rear to swerve during braking and cornering."

Here are a few key points Albright and Tamayo stressed during the demonstration:

  • Prior to purchasing tire chains or cables, consult your vehicle's manual to see if chains can be used on your vehicle.
  • Always make certain your tire chains are properly sized for your tires. A proper fit is key to performance and durability.
  • Follow directions for installing tire chains. Apply as tightly as possible by hand for maximum chain life and efficiency.
  • Be sure to pull off highway to safe place before installing, servicing, or removing tire chains.
  • Most chain and cable manufacturers recommend not exceeding 30 M.P.H. Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Avoid spinning or locking of wheels.
  • If a cross chain should fail, stop immediately and repair or remove. Carrying extra links in your vehicle is always a good idea.
