By Michael P. Neufeld
Thursday, July 3, 2008
Update — Thursday 4:33 a.m.
Highland, CA — The Browning Fire in Highland at the bottom of Highway 330 forced about a dozen homes to be evacuated before it was contained.
Fire officials report the blaze consumed about two acres and that about 14 homes were evacuated as a precaution as firefighters aided by aerial support quickly contained the 3:37 p.m. fire.
One outbuilding was destroyed during the fire that sent smoke billowing into the sky as mountain commuters made their way home up Highway 330.
The fire was behind residential structures on Browning Road and Saffron Avenue in Highland.
Update 2 — Wednesday 4:30 p.m.
Highland, CA — The so-called Browning Fire in Highland at the bottom of Highway 330 has what fire officials are calling a shaky containment.
Additional aircraft have been cancelled and mop up around structures has begun, according to scanner reports.
Update — Wednesday 4:01 p.m.
Highland, CA — The Browning Fire is currently burning upslope from Browning, however, firefighters are reportedly making good progress.
Officials now say the structure burning is not a residence but an outbuilding behind a home.
An eyewitness told RIMOFTHEWORLD.net there is now a helicopter on scene and that it's believed to be from the Sheriff's Department Aviation Unit (40-King).
Scanner reports indicate the fire is not currently a threat to the forest but has grown to almost two acres.
