Big Bear Dam Replacement Bridge Unveiled
Planned Project Outlined at Community Meeting
By Michael P. Neufeld
Tuesday, May 13, 2008
Big Bear Lake, CA – The Big Bear Dam Bridge replacement project is now back on track and was one of the topics May 13 at a Caltrans Community Meeting at the Big Bear Lake Civic Center (Hofert Hall).
Three previous community meetings on projects impacting mountain highways have been held in Lake Arrowhead, Running Springs and Crestline.
Engineer Bryce Johnson presented an overview of the project that involves replacing the existing bridge on Highway 18 at Big Bear Lake. Caltrans proposes to construct a new bridge along a new alignment over the canyon downstream from the dam.

Johnson offered information about how the new bridge will have two 12-foot travel lanes, one 12-foot turn lane, and 10-foot shoulders. There will also be a 5-foot ADA compliant on one side of the bridge. The current intersection at Highway 18 and Highway 38 will be realigned and the intersection will be signalized.
"Major traffic disruptions will be avoided," Johnson told RIMOFTHEWORLD.net, "by constructing along the new alignment. However, some detours and traffic delays will be required during certain phases of the project."

The Caltrans consultant emphasized that the project is needed to separate the highway from the dam to allow owners of the dam to make seismic and operational improvements and ensure year-round access to the Big Bear region.
Caltrans expects the project to begin late this year and be completed in Fall 2011.
In addition to the bridge, Caltrans representatives led by facilitator Dennis Green will discuss projects on various mountain highways over the next 18 months. Previous meetings have revealed the transportation agency plans to install additional guardrails to "close the gaps" along Highway 18.
