The fire of undetermined origin has consumed over 1,000 acres in a remote area of this sprawling Marine Corps base, San Diego County authorities stated.

The fire erupted in the late afternoon Wednesday and by 8 p.m. last night was burning out of control and being battled by dozens of firefighters and 20 engine companies. Air tankers and helitankers offered aerial support until sunset.

Smoke from the blaze has been reported in San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange counties.
