Hikes for Tykes at Children's Forest
Theme is Over the Rainbow
By Michael P. Neufeld
Friday, August 8, 2008
Running Springs, CA - Colors of the forest is the theme of the next exciting Hikes for Tykes program offered by the San Bernardino National Forest Association (SBNFA).
This program takes a look at some of the many hues around us in nature. Over the Rainbow will take place August 8 at 10 a.m. at the Children's Forest Visitor Information Center in Running Springs. This fun interactive program is designed for kids age 2-5 and their parents, and builds on their natural curiosity of the world around them.

"Kids hold the future of our forests in their hands," says Alison Bates, San Bernardino National Forest Association Program Coordinator. "By teaching them that nature can be fun at a young age, we are hoping to instill a love of the outdoors in the next generation."
SBNFA is offering two more Hikes for Tykes programs during the summer and all will include an interactive lesson on the subject, a short guided hike investigating the topic of the day and a related craft to take home.
Over the Rainbow (August 8) connects the colors of the rainbow to the hues found in the forest. Sounds Around Us (September 19) helps children listen for the chirps, hoots, howls, ribbits, and buzzes you can only hear in the forest.
This program has a $5 materials fee per child and space is limited to 15. Reservations are required, however, a second program will be offered at 2 p.m. to accommodate more participants. Contact Shelly Sidley at (909) 382-2600 extension 4024 or visit the SBNFA webpage at http://www.sbnfa.org for details.
The San Bernardino National Forest Association is the primary non-profit partner to the US Forest Service and, through six programs and over 1,000 volunteers, share a mutual mission of "caring for the land and serving the people" on the San Bernardino National Forest. The programs include Children's Forest, Big Bear Discovery Center, Off Highway Vehicle Outreach Education, Forest Care, Fire Lookout Hosts, and Wildfire Education Experience. For more information or to sponsor a program, please call Sarah Miggins, executive director, at (909) 382-2796.
