Catalytic Converter May Have Caused Spot Fires (Update)
Several Small Blazes Along Highway
By Michael P. Neufeld
Monday, March 24, 2008
Update — Monday 4:00 p.m.
Big Bear, CA - Fire officials have reportedly found parts of a catalytic converter along Highway 38 where several spot fires have broken out.
Scanner reports show they now believe the hot car part may be the cause of the fires and not the work of an arsonist.
A request for an arson investigator has been cancelled.
Original Story
Big Bear, CA - An arsonist may be setting a series of spot fires along Highway 38 from the bottom to the top.
Fire officials are also now speculating the cause of the spot fires may be a catalytic converter coming apart.
US Forest Service and San Bernardino County Fire are responding to the small blazes along the roadway and a Sheriff's Department helicopter is heading to the area to get a birdseye view of the area.
Forest Service officials have switched to a red tactics channel and Big Bear Fire has responded to several spot fires near the Senior Center.
