Rim Unified Students Return to Classrooms

Blue Jay, CA – Students in the Rim of the World Unified School head back to the classroom today (August 26) facing higher prices for school lunches.

A notice posted on the district's website at http://www.rimsd.k12.ca.us/ indicated that, "due to the rising costs of food and milk supplies, lunch prices have increased." The new price for grades K-6 will be $2.50 and grades 7-12 $3. Lunch prices for adults will be $3.75.

A free or reduced price (40 cents per student) meal will be available to all students qualifying for the National School Lunch program. Student eligibility is based on household income.

The district also urges motorists in and around schools to slow down and to "give our bus drivers a break by stopping when red lights are flashing."

Bus schedule information for 2008-09 is available at http://www.rimsd.k12.ca.us/buspass/buspass.htm.

Going back to school or attending school for the first time often means changes for children and families. Making smooth transitions between home and school can help new students feel good about themselves and teach them to trust other adults and children.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) recommends being enthusiastic about the change of attending kindergarten or a new school. NAEYC explains that if parents are excited and confident, children will be, also.

The organization reminds parents to always say good-bye to their student. NARYC suggests being firm, but friendly about separating.

The support group suggests not prolonging the good-bye and never ridicule a student for crying. They suggest making supportive statements like, "it's hard to say good-bye."
