Pipe Bomb Found at Abandoned MineSan Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Press Release By News Staff Member Lucerne Valley, CA — On Saturday, October 4, 2008, at about 8:45 a.m., units from the Lucerne and Victor Valley Sheriff's Stations, and units from the California Highway Patrol, responded to a reported abandoned pipe bomb in the area of Bessemer Mine. The units made contact with the reporting party, a geologist, who happened to find the device, while studying rock formations.
The location was in a remote area of Lucerne Valley. The old abandoned mine had several structures, and the pipe bomb was found inside one of the buildings. Deputies found a galvanized metal pipe with pieces of metal and screws taped around the device. A perimeter was set up and Sheriff's Bomb and Arson with County Fire responded to the location. The device was destroyed on scene by Sheriff's Bomb and Arson with no further incident.
Anyone with information regarding this case, or remember seeing anyone frequenting the mine within the last 3 weeks, is asked to contact Deputy K. Buchanan at the Lucerne Valley Station (760) 248-7655.
Map is approximate. Bessemer Mine Road south of Highway 247
