The Associated Press is reporting that Ted Kennedy, senior United States Senator from Massachusetts and a member of the Democratic Party, has lost his year-long battle against brain cancer at the age of 77.

Kennedy was the Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. Due to his long history of public service, he became known as "The Lion of the Senate". More than 300 bills that Kennedy wrote have been enacted into law. He was known for his ability to work with Republicans and to find compromises among Senate members with disparate views.

"We've lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever," the Kennedy family said in a statement. "He loved this country and devoted his life to serving it."
