Red Flag Warning Through This Evening

By Scott Straley
Tuesday, May 20, 2008

Special Weather Statement From The National Weather Service.

San Diego — A trough of low pressure moving inland through northern California and the Pacific Northwest into the Great Basin will bring strong onshore flow to southern California with strong gusty winds in the mountains and deserts at times through Wednesday. Humidity will be lowest today. Winds are expected to be stronger tonight and Wednesday but humidity will be higher.

A Red Flag Warning remains in effect from Noon today to 8 p.m. PDT this evening.

Wind gusts greater than 35 MPH combined with relative humidities less than 15 percent are expected for a period of 6 to 8 hours this afternoon and early evening for ridges and on desert slopes. Winds are expected to be stronger but humidity higher for tonight and Wednesday.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures will create explosive fire growth potential.
