PQ, the Newfie would be great... they truly are gentle giants.

Trust me...I fell in love with him just from the pics. I'm still trying to talk her into it. Her dad (my stepdad) is also looking for a dog, so if she doesn't take him, I'm hoping he will. My stepdad lives alone and is retired and that dog would be SPOILED!

Ditto on that MDW! If you know DD, which I do, you would be able to tell what she was trying to say without even having to look at the other post. It is one thing to look for a certain breed and there is nothing wrong with purebreds, but there are people looking to make a quick buck by producing backyard breeds and don't follow up. Backyard breeding and selling pups, and not taking the extreme responsibility that comes with it (like certified breeders would), is a huge problem, thus the overpopulation problem, thus the shelters being overstocked with both purebreds and mixed breeds, thus the illness and devastation, mass euthanization, that occurs because of it. There are many places to look for mixed and purebred dogs that need to be saved, puppy or adult in age. Who knows what yahoo may be on here with a certain intact dog that would breed it just because they see a need. Then the person who posted originally looking, already found a pup and there are 6-8 pups in need of a home, and now on their way down the hill or given away for free to some freak show who uses them for who knows what. Let's back off this issue. Christmas is less than a week away, and all this bickering is not worth it. For the love of Pete already? Happy Holidays ladies and gents!!

Hi PQ!
Sent: Wednesday, December 19, 2007 12:55 PM
Well said HM! Hi, btw. I just get a little defensive when someone beats up on somebody just trying to do good, but you're absolutely right. Plus, DD's a big girl and knows how to defend herself , I just felt somewhat responsible since I asked for the dog.

Most people don’t want an “older” dog, they prefer puppies, purebred or not, that are less than a year, preferably only a few months. Many people look at the older dogs as “undesirable”, they may already have bad habits, personality problems, or poor training that one must invest time/money into reversing. The general thought process is that “they’re just too much trouble to bother with.”

If you look at foster situation for children, you will find many similarities, most people looking to bring a child into their home don’t want an “older” child, for many of the same reasons. They want a baby. And, yes, this is a sad commentary on our society, but I digress.

I abhor backyard breeders that turn out puppies without regard to their health and well being, or the type of home they’re going to, only to make money & satisfy a need created folks wanting only a puppy. (I don’t hold the people that encourage this practice by buying from them or from pet stores in very high regard either!) But, I do applaud the efforts of any one willing to take on the challenges presented by taking an older dog (or child) into their home and give them a second chance a life.

There is, obviously, a place for purebreds, and a right way to secure purebred PUPPIES! Those of us with common sense understand this, those without will continue posts with snide attacks.

DD, PQ UCAN, and the many others on here, God Bless you and keep up the wonderful work you do to help the furkids (shellkids, featherkids, etc…) on the mountain.

Those that aren’t interested in helping these helpless creatures, and are only interested in being petty about remarks that have been taken completely out of context and twisted to the point where they are no longer recognizable, I don’t even have to expend the energy to hit the ignore button. I can just as easily ignore the post as soon as I see the name.

PQ, Good luck in finding a dog for your sister, it’s too bad Sadie won’t work but I’m sure the right one’s out there.

Happy Holidays All!

No, no, no. Neither of you are to blame. Just another case of misunderstanding on the rim. I was just laughing at how many times I said "thus" above, lol. I hope they find the perfect dog.

From: gypsySent: Wednesday, December 19, 2007 12:10 PMoh, and nobody should be allowed to own a purebred dog....because dogdawn doesn't agree with it. MUTTS ONLY!

Geeze, do we have more than one DD? It was DD that found my 10 yr old Chance on CL and emailed me. It was DD that emailed several times when my furbabies were sick. Must have been another DD because all my furkids are purebred Doxies. All older rescue dogs. According to Gypsy, DD definitely wouldn't be interested in my chosen breed. xoxoxoxo love ya lady

Gypsy, I suggest you go back to bed and get up on the right side of it. Or have less coffee.

Thank you lovesanimals! I will pass this info on to my sister. I called her earlier, but her husband told me she was at the shelter in Lancaster. I don't know if she found a dog, but I guess as long as she rescues one, I will be happy!

This comment is so true:

"Most people don’t want an “older” dog..."

I have adopted at least 8 seniors in my life and cherish the memory of each one of them. Seniors are little work because they are already trained and adjusted to humans. They are so grateful for any little bit of love and attention they get. The last senior I adopted was 11 year old Molly, an abused basset hound that someone just dumped on the side of the road. Because of her age, she was "unadoptable" and scheduled to be put down.

We gave Molly 3 years of additional life and she gave us unconditional love.

I urge everyone to give older dogs a chance. You won't regret it, they make perfect pets.

pokerqueen,
You are welcome! The link to the Devore shelter is
http://www.petharbor.com/
type in San Bernardino, CA at the left search window and find San Bernardino, Devore shelter and you can see their pics in adoptable dogs. We adopted our 3 year old male black Lab early this year and he is the most loving male we have ever had or seen in our lives! He is such a gentle soul! We also have a precious loving 7 year old Golden Retriever female that we love!
Good luck! Sporting dogs are usually great with kids.

I have been fostering a beautiful mixed dog. She is a very sweet girl, house broken, clean, and very polite (most of the time). She seemes like she would be a great family dog. DD saw her, and thought so too. I know she is not lab or golden but still she is a good sized dog, very pretty markings. Come by and see her!!!!
