I just had my puppy neutered and they told me I didn't need any painkillers because they give a long lasting injection while he's there. I think he needs something because he had trouble sleeping and will sit and whine. I don't know if it's the pain of the incision or itching from shaving in the area. He just wants to get at it. Can I give him something or put something on it to help him? I'm afraid that I'll do something wrong and hurt him more. I'm trying to comfort him and do things to take his mind off of it, but that only works for a while. Help!

You can give benadryl. It is not a pain reliever but has a relaxing effect and may help more if the discomfort is caused by the itching irration. It acts more like a tranquilizer. I have given it to my dog when she broke out in hives. It is important that you do not give the liquid or gel cap form. Capsules or pills can be used in dogs. Here is a link to the dosing info for dogs.

Thank you both for your advice. The link was very helpful. He seems much better today. Of course he's sleeping now. Let's hope we can all get some sleep tonight.
Hello Diamond! Heard anything about our "Mystery" horse lately?

I always have a bottle of doggie aspirin on hand for things like this. I bought mine at Walmart, it is by the brand, "Hartz" and in the pet isle.

didn't they sell you one of those elizabethan(?) collars to keep him from getting @ his stitches? You know, one of those cone things made of hard plastic.

hi lamama the soft collar would be more ideal as the other one acts as a space helmant for dogs..

they bump into every thing with that one ..make sure you put up anything that can break,, i learned that one years ago also.. as to mystery no havent heard a thing.. would be nice tho..take care..nice to hear from you..

the benadrill allergic kind for kids is the stuff i have used mine is 25mgs but depending on the size of your fur kid just be carefull..i use 1/2 of a 25mg for a 40 lb dog.. like someone brought out..it does help to relaxe them
also childrens asprin only the chewable kind i give to my dogs when they are in major pain..but again you have to be carefull with that also... depending the size of the dog..for puppies please ask your vet.. last thing you want to do is make the pup worse.. hope he and you are ok sooon,,

lovemypuppies, please try & stay away from HArtz products. For one thing they're made in China

and for another, there have been animals that have gotten sick from their products. Ok mostly their flea stuff, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
LAMAMA, best to double check with your vet before you give your wee pup anything!!

I agree w/dogdawn, I have never had a neutered dog have problems or cry or be uncomfortable after being nuetered. I have alway had The San Bernardino Humane Society do it.

They did put one of the big plastic collars on him, which has kept him from getting at the incision, but he's still been uncomfortable. The vet said that beagles don't tolerate pain well, and he is a beagle mix of some kind. He cried when he got his vaccinations too, so it could just be that he has a low tolerance for pain.
Diamond - I just saw one of those collars in a softer material in a catalog. I should have had the foresight to get it. Maybe a pet store up here will have one.
He's only 15 pounds, so I'm a bit apprehensive about dosing meds on my own. He seems more comfortable now, so we'll just have to see how tonight goes. Luckily I got a bit of a nap in with him today.
By the way, is the scrotum area supposed to be red? His incision looks fine, but the other looks a bit red to me. They told me there would be brusing in that area, but it looks more red than purple.

either way ask the vet what to do.. as to redness sounds like irration..should go away in a few days,, i only have large dogs so i am really no help..

Much better last night. Got a full night's sleep. He's doing so much better. Now just have to keep him down. He wants to jump and play, and is trying to get the cone off his head. Can't wait until this is over. I think I'll adopt an older dog next time that is already fixed.

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it.

LAMAMA, glad he's getting better!! I remember my dog's incision site looking bad then better & bad again. I just kept an eye on it, his temperature & his overall disposition. & never hesitate to call your vet if you ever has ay questions. We went to AAH & they'd put up w/ all my stuff. LOL!

OK, now he's gotten the cone off his head and I keep putting it back on trying to make it tighter, but afraid I'll choke him. Can I just leave it off now?

if he goes back to bitting at his stitches growl at him and let him know you dont care for his behavior .. look him in the eyes and growl..he will get the message and quit

I got it back on and looks like it's staying on now. He went to licking the incision area, so I thought I'd better put it back on for at least a few more days. I like the growling idea. I'll try that if it comes off again. Thanks all.

We had an older keeshound that had problems with his hips. We gave him enteric asperin. It's coated so it doesn't hurt their stomache like regular asperin. Towards the end of his days with us I had to take him to the vet for a seizure, the vet said the enteric asperin was fine as it is coated. You can get it anywhere, Walgreens, etc. Back then it was about a buck a bottle. (I used to buy mine at Kaiser.) It's a great anti inflamatory. You can also put neosporin on the incision if you can keep him from licking it. I have a puppy that will be getting neutered in about 5 months, hopefully it will go smoothly for him.
