All this talk about Hwy.18, Panorama Point & Vista Point is bringing back memories of when we first moved up here. That was 1965. The new Hwy.18 was being paved for the "1st. time"

Hmmm... wasn't that when they widened the highway to 4 lanes? I remember we had to turn off our am radios traveling thru there due to explosives being used. A lot of times we were detoured onto old Waterman Canyon.

A few years later... 67? or was it 69? the whole highway just below panorama point was completely washed out.

Did she do the narrows too?

It's been awhile, isn't it overdue for a catastrophic shutdown?

RSBruce: You're right. That is when they went to 4 lanes. It's all coming back to me now. Thanks....

The wash out was above upper waterman canyon. A house near the top was filled with rocks up to the gables. They built a temporary detour upstream to clear that area while it was being rebuilt.

The 4 lane project was during '64 and '65.

I didn't live up here then, but a co-worker did and she complained the whole time about not being allowed up or down during daylight hours. Residents had to drive on dirt through the construction zone outside work hours.

When it went to four lanes, my Dad started to refer to it as the "high gear road".
