No one is saying that tailgating is not illegal. But, if more people used the turnouts there would be fewer tailgaters.

Often I have come up the 330 trying to keep a safe distance from the car in front of me. However, the car will drive 45 to 50 mph between curves, then slow down to 30 in the curves (it doesn’t seem to matter how sharp the curve is). This will bring me up on the car’s tail. The driver will again pick up speed passing by turnout after turnout. I am sorry; this is very frustrating for me.

As for the nut on the motorcycle…his life expectancy was not very high anyway. Some bikers feel they are invincible.

its not how sharp the curve is , its how far you can see around it

These are just the funnest threads. I have never seen so many slants on something so ... basic. Fact is, there will always be someone going too slow, and someone going (what you think...)is too fast. In the snow, I have passed over the middle, at least I think. It's hard to see where the yellow line is when it is burried by inches of snow. Yet when the car in front of me went no faster than 5 MPH and had no consideration of the 20+ cars behind, I, along with 10 or so other cars at the front of the line made the pass in a straight section near the top of 330. Was this rude? Was this dangerous? Was this necessary? Maybe, no, and definitely. Sometimes people are in a hurry for a good reason and sitting behind some JA doing 1/3 the safe speed is a heavy burden. Kids have to be picked up from school. Doctor's appointments need to be met, people need to get to work on time, and on and on. Sometimes there may be a legitimate emergency someone is trying to tend to. I don't judge why the angry SUV driver tailgates me. If he does, I pull over and smile at the dude as he makes his way. Usually he waves in a gesture of gratitude. If, around the next corner, I find his SUV in twist around a rock, I think "Well, he should have slowed down." It's not my job to be someone's personal law enforcement. It's not my job to assume I should make someone else drive slower. It IS my human duty to be respectful of others. For the most part, I acknowledge that 330 can be navigated at what many on this thread depict as high speed, safely. But don't think I won't call 911 if you blow past folks in the passing lanes at 100 MPH (I've seen it, and I've called), because I will. Likewise, if you (lady in the green Subaru at 7:00 AM)have even one car behind you, don't be the JA that thinks the next passing lane is only 4 miles away; Use the turnout. For all you know, someone is going to be fired because of your insistence on being an unpaid highway patroller.

We should always yield to bullies in SUVs on 330 and pull out of their way ASAP. Hey they might be late for work, on the way to pick up their kid, or late for the Doctor’s appointment to deal with that anger management problem and out of medication. Be respectful of bullies in SUVs who tailgate as their vehicle is bigger than yours.

Exactly, William...err Bill. I think we should yield to all bullies, not just the ones in SUVs, but also the one's in Prius's (if they can go that fast anyway), the moms, the dads, the grandmas, the grandpas, the great grandmas....the drug dealers, the scruffy people, the clean cut people, the Carl's Jr. Truck, etc. If someone wants/needs to go faster then, say, you, then so be it. Who are we to judge why they are going fast and who appointed any of us to tell them what to do on the road? I agree fully...yield to the bully. Who cares if they drive a SUV or look like scum or whatever. Just use that turnout. Failure to do so is failure to make the most of our tax dollars! Failure to do so is rude! And failure to so suggests quite a bit about the driver at the front of the line; even if he is going 55 or more! Yes, yield to horn honking, light flashing, finger flipping, cussword shouting, tattooed, skinheaded, bully. Why not?

Yeah, they may also be packing. I know I do, so why wouldn't a bully or tweaker be packing also.

You are right there some very funny posts on here. I don't think one person is advocating driving 5mph with 20 cars stacked behind them, or some JA driving 1/3 the safe speed. If there is a person like that please speak up and defend this position. What I and others are saying is that there is NO good reason to endanger every ones life on the highway. Being late for a Doctors appointment or trying to get your child to school on time does not qualify for you to engage in a dangerous and unlawful acts that put everyone around you in danger. We are also saying that you, and you alone, are responsible for "YOUR" actions. There will always be drivers on the road who don't drive at speed that you would like to travel, perhaps an older driver or a new driver or a rude driver, none of these drivers justify another driver to act in a deadly manner. While old and new drivers are certainly an irritant they do not pose the same danger as someone passing illegally, tailgating, and/or speeding with a pissed off driving attitude. If you find that you are driving around pissed off at other drivers and it is affecting your driving you might want to consider counseling.

If you think their would be less tailgaters based on people using turnouts? HA!, not very many. There are always going to be those poo heads we all can't stand until something drastic or tragic happens to them or one of us. There really isn't a thing we can do about it as concerned citizens, except complain on here! Lots of people whine constantly about this and those same people whine when they lower the speed limits on highway 18! (hint hint). Seriously people, GET A HOBBY!!!

I agree with all of the above, other than to add that the reasons some of us say the things we do about traffic laws is based on our perception of the traffic laws. For me, I agree with the need to enforce safe driving. On the other hand, I don't consider speed limits to be high and mighty. I don't consider the yellow line to be an absolute when someone is going 5 mph. Right now, the average speed on 3 southern Cal. freeways all lanes is over 75 mph. So obviously, speed limits are designed not only for safety in mind, but also for revenue in mind, to be enforced when convenient. Which leads me to my point, which is that some speed limits are set low on purpose knowing that revenue will be generated from individuals paying for tickets for driving a very natural speed. I'm not saying anything about 55 mph on 330, or 40 mph to Big Bear. I'm saying in general, you expect this outcome. I also expect that about once in 5 years, most people, no matter how 'law-abiding' they are, will get some type of fine. That's how the system is designed.

So I operate on a "drive with respect for others" mode, and I doubt I'm ever the guy you flip off or who flips you off. It's rare, like once a week...Just kidding. Pretty much only rarely when someone really drives wrecklessly or ignorantly.

I finally got pissed off to the point of finger pointing last week.

I like to take the side road off the freeway that parallels Waterman. I NEVER go over the speed limit there. Nice residential street. Some Ahole in a white big ish truck (with his wifey) is on my butt the entire block. So, I come to a complete stop at the sign (stop sign!) and he lays on the horn. His wife must be so proud.

So here is my 330 story:

I was in labor on my way to the hospital but luckily not in so much pain that I didn't still have my sense of humor. My husband got stuck behind behind more people out for a sunday drive going down the mountain than I would have ever thought possible! I thought he was going to have a coronary he was so upset!

So the moral of the story - sometimes people would like to get down the mountain faster than 30 miles per hour, but I personally think God put those slow pokes in front of us to slow my husbands driving down. (he also hit EVERY red light ont the way to redlands community)

Still makes me laugh at how mad he was at those cars that refused to get out of his way

adpi1851 I hear ya, it was that way when I drove my wife to the hospital with our first child, just not on the 330, it's like a freakin conspiracy to make you have the baby in the car.
KP, that's funny, you told the a-hole in the big truck he was number one.

KB I know people in that residential neighborhood appreciate you staying with in the speed limit. My husband used to drive on Sierra everyday because his office was on Sierra, but closer to Mill Street. You always had to be careful there and there were some people that insisted on driving faster. When it is around Christmas I love to cruise down the streets over by the little golf course, the streets east of Waterman. Those homes always have beautiful lighting and decorations. At night you might find me driving really slow there.

I moved here in 2007 from Omaha, NE, the official tailgater capital of the world. You have to tailgate in Omaha on the freeways, and you never let in ANYONE because sure shooting that person will reduce their speed and put five car lengths in front of them and the car in front. No one used their signals on the freeway because no one will let you in. You pace yourself and slide in without notice. This being said, California is much more polite on its freeway system.

I have driven the mountain now for these two years and have grown to respect the 330 and the 18. I love the curves and have no problems with the speed limits. Occasionally I feel the need to tailgate, but not until it's really necessary to move someone out of the way. Occasionally I honk at them and they usually use a turnout. I'm respectful of others coming up behind me and immediately use the first turnout. What I hate are the people who feel they must "control" the road, slow before passing lanes and fast on the passing areas. Those are the people who are dangerous. I think they enjoy controlling those behind them. And, these are not mountain people, they are from DTH who are on the ego trip thing.

On a last note, I was following a CHP up this year on the 330 and he came upon a very slow person who did not take a turnout. He turned his lights on, the person immediately used the next turnout and the CHP keep on going! Yea! I kept behind this CHP all the way up (at a distance, of course) and it was truly an amazing ride!

I know I'm going to take a hit for saying I tailgate only when necessary to move someone out of the way. Believe me, it is done only with kindness!
