Ron, I think you are confusing the wireline side with the wireless side of AT&T.

Cingular took over AT&T's wireless side, and sold the old Cingular assets to T-Mobile (which previously were reselling Cingular airtime under the T-Mobile name).

SBC took over AT&T's wired telecom business (what there was left of it).

The reason that some had to get new cellphones and some didn't is that those that did NOT have to get new phones, had multimode phones that worked with both the TDMA and CDMA modulation types as well as the 800 Mhz and the higher bands as well.

Those that DID have to change phones had either old analog 800 MHz phones (which had nothing to do with the above) or could not meet the modulation type or frequency bands of the new carrier, and these phones had to be replaced.

I think you are correct TP. I've always had Verizon landline since they were General Telephone. This topic was cellular and that is what I was talking about until the At&t brand discussion. I don't think I was aware of the distinction. Your explanation makes sense.
