I couldn't get the wirefeed to penetrate the 1/4" steel. I even tried to pre-heat the metal with a propane torch...

I assume you are trying to run a wire through the firewall.
You can try running the wire through an existing hole or rubber grommet. You can also drill a hole and use a grommet from the auto parts store.

It's about welding...
I'm adding a front springhanger. The Chevy Axles are wider than the toyota. I have most of the metal cut... but the reinforcing plates for the power steering, the hangers... all the gussets are 1/4" steel. My wirefeed welder won't keep the metal hot enough to get good penetration.
Because this is a suspension part... and having it come apart on the road wouldn't be good at all.... I need to know that the welds are good.

Sabro;
I have been told that if you pre heat the area with a torch and then weld with your wire feed you can accomplish a better weld with the low amperage welder.
you might need to be concerned "tempering" or softening the material with overheating and slow cooling...
Good luck

I tried that... I did a small area... and then smacked it with a hammer. Very little penetration. The heat seems to disipate too quickly. I tried about a two inch area three times with only about 1/2 penetration....
I don't think I am doing this right.

Can anyone spare some time?

Does anyone have a bit of time to show me how to stick weld?
There could be a Papa Jack's burger or Bus Stop Hippy Tuna in it for them.
