Coral: The established contractors up here have the problem. They hire who they can that can do the work and some of those are from dth. Contractors from down the hill also have the problem finding good craftsmen. It is universal. Many builders left years ago for greener pastures like Las Vegas, Reno, Central Valley from Sacramento to Tahoe where building is still booming. Your experience doesn't mean all contractors from dth are crooks. There are good ones who can do the work and they are the ones you want if you want construction to start this year.

ron,yer absolutely correct.but there seems to be a lack of skilled carpenters/contractors everywhere in ca.that's why i work alone.however,i'm in need of skilled,or even trainable people and if it takes a 6 month"School of mtn.carpentry"funded by me,on the intricasies of local code, water-proofing,deck and built-up technology, then bring-on anybody,i don,t care if yer from jupiter!but you need MORE than average, fundamental skills in the first place,to even qualify.because a person can install a pre-hung door, doesnt make you(necessarily)capable.most of the local, reputable, contractors are at least somewhat, familiar with custom applications.anybody can replace burned siding, frame, roof, etc.yet, while you got the saws out, there are an enormous ammt. of local folks that need other, little things done for them.this is(or,at least WAS) a land of second homes.people tend to neglect second homes.when up-date/remo/addition time comes around, are the average, highly skilled carpenters going to be able to accomodate the very specific, yet wide ranging needs of local customers?are you going to drive 60 miles to tweak a dishwasher door that"just does'nt seem to close right".are you prepared to fabricate wooden products that no longer exist,at a REASONABLE cost, because you can?many new homes here are home-depot,many are not.adaptability along with ability is uncommon.and the response from the few, anymore that are capable,in the end plays on proximity.
