I was the individual that reported the fires along the lower 18. I was so impressed by all the mountain residents that stopped to put out the fires. We had people bringing us water bottles, sand bags, shovels, and one gentleman brought us 2 fire extinguishers. We had all the fires out before the fire department got there. I missed the vechicle to get the license plate. I want to thank everyone who stopped to help us! The Mountain Community is FANTASTIC!

Investigators from the San Bernardino City Fire Department explain the fires were indeed started by items tossed out the window of a vehicle as it made its way towards lower Waterman Canyon Road but that the act was accidental.

How do you accidentaly throw flaming objects from your car?

A friend mentioned that he saw part of this last night at dinner. He was coming up the hill and noticed a current generation white Toyota Tacoma turning off a dirt road onto the highway, while a group of people with shovels were pointing at the truck. He was comming off a 12 hour shift and was a little confused at what he was seeing. Moments later, fire trucks streamed down the hill. He said he saw no flames. I'll call him and tell him it was just an accident. A misunderstanding.

Saying that these fires were started accidentally is like saying the guy who threw lit matches from his van while going up hill by Waterman Canyon four years ago did not mean to start the Old Fire. Any idiot should know that doing so could cause a fire.
