You are a teenager till you hit twenty, the fact that the law says you are an adult has no bearing on it. Eigh TEEN nine TEEN twenty Capice

You can expect more of this since it is unconstitutional to teach kids morals anymore.

All the people that showed up to fight are criminals. And one of these criminals got killed. I feel for the families and am disapointed that we are starting to see the increase of gang viloance in our community.

Who were these kids?

My heart goes out to all the people that this horrible event has touched...Two groups of kids, (and they are kids), who never got along, because one group was "popular" and the other group was not, finally reached a head, literally. Where are the kids parents? Why are they still in Big Bear? There is nothing Big Bear has to offer once you graduate from High School. There are no jobs, no creative pursuits, and no higher education. It doesn't surprise me that this happened. Just sit and watch the kids drive up and down Big Bear Blvd. with nothing to do, and nowhere to go. I hope that this stops other violence from happening. I hope the "popular" kids will realize what they do to torment others, will come home to roost, as it did that fateful night on Knickerbocker. Something is terribly wrong in Big Bear, and it's time to deal with it.

This was about the popular crowd vs. the not popular? This is really depressing.

Something is terribly wrong with the teenage community in all of our mountain communites from Crestline to Big Bear. In the last couple of weeks there has been this incident and a girl who drank too much alcohol at a party in Crestline and died. She was only 16. The party was all teenagers and somehow they got their hands on the booze. The lastest tragedy was not mentioned here on rimoftheworld.net, but is in this week's Alpenhorn and Mountain News papers (if you want the whole story, pick up the Alpenhorn). It appears that recently there was a party up at Keller Peak which is in the Running Springs area. This party was also made up of young people. At about 2 a.m. a girl errouneously identified a 17 year old who was at the party as a person who was involved in a traffic altercation a few days earlier. This caused other partygoers to start throwing things at him and his car. The 17 year old got in his car and left with two other people. Instead of doing the rational thing and letting the guy go, two other cars full of party goers followed the 17 year old and his passengers. They chased him, and one of the cars rammed his vechile trying to make him crash. They also threw things at his vechile and shouted death threats. While attempting to ram his car again, the truck that was trying to instigate an accident got in an accident itself when it failed to negotiate a turn and flipped over. The passenger in this truck was the brother of the driver. He was hanging out the door, sitting on it. He was also the brother of the driver. He was thrown from the vechile which came to land on top of him, killing him. There were also people in the bed of the truck. They were thrown out and injured. The 17 year old drove to the Valero gas station in Arrowbear with another car of partygogers in pursuit. They reported the incident to the sheriff's department at the station. When the deputies arrived, the pursuing parties were chanting death threats against the three occupants of the car that was being chased.
Needless to say, the driver who caused the accident is in very big trouble. The smart thing would have been to let it go, and not go chasing after him especially since the 17 year old had nothing to do with the earlier traffic accident. The driver of the other pursuing car should not have went after him as well. Whatever damage was done to whomever's car in the earlier accident pails in comparison to the price that this person is going to have to pay for for the rest of his life. A few hundred or thousand dollars to fix a car or years of prison knowing that your actions caused the death of your brother. Which costs more? Unfortunately, young people today are making very stupid choices.

Since when is it acceptable to say a murder is justified because somebody got their feelings hurt? This may have started out years ago as a "jocks versus punks" scenario; it really is about maturity and responsibility. Neither party was "big enough" to turn down their music, so they decided to have a fist-fight in the middle of the night. Not a responsible thing to do, but still one side of the fight showed up to have a fair fight, armed only with their fists; the other side showed up with crowbars and baseball bats and commenced to beat Mike to death. His friend tried to protect him by laying on top of him, which is how he got his arms broken.
Although a abhor what these three men did, it must have been very difficult for them to turn themselves in. They did the right thing ... after doing the wrong thing.
What happened on Knickerbocker was immaturity and irresponsibility on the part of both parties, and that is something we need to teach our children - not "if somebody calls you a name or makes fun of you, you have the right to physically harm or even kill them." My heart goes out to the parents of Mike, who are such sweet, wonderful people, and to the families of the 6 other men involved.
Now is the perfect time to sit down with your kids and discuss morals, values and how to treat someone else. I talked to mine also about being the bigger person and walking away, turning off your music first, etc.

NOTE TO allenkephart-
RIMOFTHEWORLD.net not only had the story of the Keller Peak Incident just MINUTES after it happened but a reporter was on scene and took pictures of the vehicle, interviewed authorities and also interviewed some of the teenagers involved. It was a real tragedy that was fully covered by RIMOFTHEWORLD.net long before it appeared in the local weeklies.
