Glad I wasn't the only one that smelled something. I walked out of my house near Panorama around 7 ish yesterday morning and I smelled smoke too...I just thought maybe it was drift smoke from another fire or something. Or maybe my nose is too sensitive to that smell!

Good to know I'm not completely nuts.

I thought I smelled smoked yesterday, too. Assumed I was just paranoid. Certainly glad it turned out to be nothing in this area.

Just peeked in on this thread. I work on the mountain as a fire lookout.

Even fire stations on the forest (both our Mountaintop District down on San Jacinto District) are smelling the smoke this week. And if a firefighter can smell it, it must be strong!

Diamond was right: It's coming from the hundreds of fires burning all over our state.

Diamond, that Piute Fire is actually in Kern County, between Lake Isabella and Tehachapi. It was named for its proximity to Piute Mountain Road (and Piute Peak). The largest of the Humboldt County fires is the Hell's Half Complex. In hard-hit Butte County, the town of Paradise lost 74 homes last month. Now, about 4,000 residents around Paradise have been ordered to evacuate when blew embers across containment lines. And we still could lose Big Sur to the Basin Complex. Fire blew threw the nearby Tassajara Zen Center this afternoon, giving the monks a chance to practice the Zen of firefighting; no one was injured.

And now here comes the North American Monsoon. That will bring dry lightning to our parched mountains this summer. Hold on tight. And if you do see smoke, call it in.
