There is also a side benefit to wearing a Kilt. It is a great conversation starter. I have met many really nice and good folks over the years because they come up and ask about the Kilt and then a great conversation ensues. Kilt wearing is not for the antisocial, that's for sure!

Sorry, I didn't mean to post that website twice. I forgot that I already posted it. Not trying to make any gratuitous plugs.

Mountain Scot:

I was just wondering when you were the kilt, what does the pouch signify?
Sent: Monday, March 24, 2008 10:15 AM
The pouch is called a sporran. It was originally used to carry some oats while out hunting. Now it takes care of the fact that Kilts don't have pockets so you have to have someplace to keep your keys! Outside of that, there isn't a whole lot of meaning behind it. They do, however, sometimes get very elaborate and ornate. I have several but my favorite is my full mask skunk!

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Semi dress black leather sporran. A Sporran is a pouch (Scottish Gaelic for 'purse').

Now a decorative part of Highland dress, it was originally an everyday practical item. Made of leather or fur, it usually has more or less elaborate silver or other ornamentation, especially on the clasp or hanger. It is worn on a chain or belt around the waist, allowing the sporran to lie below the waist of the person wearing a kilt.

Since the traditional kilt does not have pockets, the sporran serves as a wallet and container for any other necessary personal items (such as a hip-flask). It is essentially a survival of the common European medieval belt-pouch, superseded elsewhere as clothing came to have pockets, but continuing in the Scottish Highlands because of the lack of these accessories in traditional dress.

The sporran also protects a person's decency. This was originally because the ancient 'great plaid' (Gaelic breacan an fhèilidh), formed of a long draped cloth, had a gap at the front, and in more modern times because the kilt is traditionally worn without undergarments. Historically, the sporran was used to carry a day's rations. Some believe it served as armour for the groin.

Enjoy

Wow! I coldn't have ever said it better! I forgot about the part of protecting ones decency but that is very legit. My wife would never let me out of the house without the sporran.

Pipers and military people often wear some extravagant and long horse hair sporrans. I am currently restoring an antique one of these. Most people wear the ones described above. The dress sporrans are the ones mentioned in that dscription. A casual on is usually just made of leather. The animal masks are both casual and extremely formal.

The reason men wear kilts is that sheep are afraid of zippers

TITLE: The Scotsman
Lyrics and Chords

Well, a Scotsman clad in kilt left the bar one evening fair
And one could tell by how he walked that he'd drunk more than his share
He fumbled 'round until he could no longer keep his feet
And he stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street
Ring-ding-diddle-liddle-I-de-o, ring-di-diddley-I-o
Oh, he stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street

/ A - E B7 / EB7 EA B7 E /

About that time two young and lovely girls just happened by
One says to the other with a twinkle in her eye
See yon sleeping Scotsman so strong and handsome built
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt...

They crept up on that sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be
Lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see
And there behold for them to view beneath his Scottish skirt
Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth...

They marveled for a moment then one said we must be gone
Let's leave a present for our friend before we move along
As a gift they left a blue silk ribbon tied into a bow
Around the bonnie star the Scots kilt did lift and show...

Now the Scotsman woke to nature's call and stumbled towards the trees
Behind the bush he lifts his kilt and gawks at what he sees
And in a startled voice he says to what's before his eyes
Oh, lad I don't know where you've been but I see you won first prize...
