Good points, shoestring. Playing music is much more constructive than many other activities. Hopefully they can achieve a balance whereby they have sufficient freedom to develop their talents, while respecting their neighbors. As for us, as long as our late-60s parents who live south of the highway can fall asleep by 8:30 or 9:00 PM, we will remain tolerant.

Oops, I meant "north of the highway". The band plays on the south side of the highway, facing north toward our parents' home.

I have yet to complain about barking dogs in the neighborhood, I have not moved next to a ball field, and I have no problem with the noise playing children make. I do have issues with electronically amplified music/noise being played in an open garage blaring at the neighborhood across the road. If they have a love or passion for what they are doing, then they should be able to make the effort to find a place to practice that doesn’t alter the ambiance of an existing neighborhood.

It’s about respect and reasonable consideration for others.

Wow! I'm totally typeless for a response. While shoestring made a valid point, you are totally living inside the wrong bubble.
I had to come home yesterday afternoon to grab some items I had forgotten to take with me in the morning, upon arriving home the "rock band in training" was at it with the volume turned up to 11. Granted this was about 5pm and I needed to be back in Redlands in under an hour so I didn't have time to stop and say anything and they were all packed up and done playing by the time I came back at just before midnight. The fact that I've been home all day to this point and it's been peacefully quiet is redundant right now, as I'm leaving in a few minutes for the day. But had I been woken up by their talented and artistic interpretation of "Purple Haze" (no idea ifthey can play it or not)I would have been pissed off beyond belief.

There are certain noises that are acceptable and nothing can be done about it; construction sounds, highway noise, and wildlife (domestic or wild) can't be helped. But the noise created and generated by amplified sounds through an electronic source vibrating my windows and eardrums is not acceptable by any moral or ethical standards. Photographers blackout their windows and create a dark atmosphere to work in. Writers create an ambiant workplace to think and imagine while their mind puts their thoughts to paper. A musician who practices their art within the confines of a neighborhood needs to soundproof their practice environment as to not upset the balance of the neighborhood.

Maybe if they thought more like a drug dealer or an internet webcam hooker they'd be more discrete about what goes on there and nobody would even know... Or maybe they're trying to get discovered by having by playing open garage roadside shows along the highway?

I would wait on the grammar police, but I have places to go and people to do... I mean see.

well you listeners have three choices as i see it. one, confront the band members. two, call the cops. or three, tolerate it. i have no idea how loud or annoying their music is. I am just offering up a point of view on the matter. most famous bands got their start in someones garage. and I'm sure the neighbors complained then as well. I have found personally that if something is bothering me and i think about it, it starts bothering me more. if i try and ignore it, pretty soon i forget it is even there. the kids have found something to do, that isn't illegal, immoral, or dangerous, that they obviously enjoy. it seems a shame to put an end to it. maybe you should go hang out there and enjoy the music for an hour or so. tell them that they sound great and are making good progress on their talents. then yawn and stretch and tell them you have to go to bed now because you have to get up for work very early, and ask them if they could turn it down a bit. then go home and fall asleep with the tv turned up just enough to drown them out. i would sure like the people who have to hear this to come to some middle ground so the kids could continue and you could get some sleep. and not put an end to it just because you don't like it. in other words, cut the kids some slack. they are not hurting anyone, just making some noise, like most kids do. I loiter around here every once in a while and read what people are saying. I only contribute when i feel my point of view can be constructive. But one thing I have learned here over the years is this- people will complain about anything and everything. including but not limited to drivers, flat landers, cops, gas prices, grogery prices, local mechanics, schools, teachers, bus passes, school picture prices, school lunches, dining establishments, newspaper deliverers, snow plows, cable tv providers, internet providers, utility providers, trash service, barking dogs, loud music, firemen not parked in front of their house during a fire, firewood ads, gout, hemmoroids, pms. I could go on and on but you get my point. some people just aren't happy unless they have something to gripe about. i often wonder if the gripe is a legit gripe or if the gripe-er is just unhappy to begin with. But this site has enough gripe-ing to float a battleship in.

ok, i just returned from a little jaunt. deerlick and hwy 18, found it. Ito's ski rental on one corner, a house with a garage on the other. I think I see a pond there so this must be the place. i turned around and looked across the highway to see a well drilling yard and deerlick's old nursery property. The closest house across the highway from the garage in question has to be over 200 yards away. garage bands seldom amplify their drums. yet they rattle your windows 200 yards away? come on now! maybe I'll return later as the garage door was shut when I was there. i'd like to hear these kids for myself. If they are practicing often, they are probably getting pretty good. If I am alone in supporting kids with clean hobbies, then so be it. besides practicing a little live and let live makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I have quite a few years before i get to age where i start saying "these good-for-nothing young whippersnappers must be stopped". hopefully i never get there! I will keep a sharp eye out for the wierd hoods and candles just in case. But music is good for the soul. God himself will back me up on that one.

and for lugnuts, forgetting something and returning to arrowbear to get it and going back to work! how about your carbon footprint. you just doubled it. arrowbear to redlands, back to arrowbear, back to redlands and back to arrowbear I'm having a hard time breathing with all of your carbon you are forcing me to live with. maybe you should be more considerate to others and not do that. you just did what you felt necessary without any consideration for others. how will we ever become independent from foreign oil when you burn it up that way? now i'm just kidding here, i'm not holding this against you but get the point? live and let live!

shoestring, hold your judgement til a "band" practices into your home. It's annoying, no, it's rude. These canyons pick up sounds and amplify them in very strange ways. Above me, I can only hear them at certain times, below, I can hear phone conversations when they're inside their houses.

We love music. But band "PRACTICE" should at least be in an enclosed, preferably soundproof (but not required) room.

Hopefully the cooler weather will make them close the door .

And, turning it up full blast doesn't make sense if they are actual musicians that are honing their skills. They can't hear it either!

Sounds like they just want to make a lot of noise.

Well shoestring, the carbon footprint I left was cheaper than the $2500 worth of gear I forgot to take with me. Now I could have been considerate to the environment and dropped the cash at a few places DTH and made some salespersons day complete on the commission they would have gotten. But no, the extra 45 miles or so I had to drive was worth the $5.92 for two gallons of gas I had to waste on fetching my gear.

And I'm just joking here... But aren't the people who bitch about carbon footprints the same folks that drive those oversized Suburbans or Hummers? All the tell tale signs of the pot calling the kettle black to me.

There is a simple solution to this. Just call the Sheriff's Dept. at 336-0600. They will send a deputy out there to tell them to quiet down. If it continues, just keep calling the Sheriff's Dept. and they eventually will get the message, or should I say the fine that they deserve.

Good thing that they are not holding Raves at this house. The last one at the Orange Show in San Bernardino could be heard in Redlands.
