On Hwy 138, one mile west of I15, on the south side of the road (on the left as you travel west), there are ruins of some old building at the base of the hill (You can see it from the road, best from where 138 goes OVER the tracks... the building is just south of where 138 goes UNDER the tracks...). There's grafitti all over the concrete remains, but I can't tell what the structure was. There seems to be a base to an old chimney (it's perhaps 10' X 10' square, and lined with a couple of layers of brick), but there's no way to tell how tall it was. There is an abundance of crumbled white quartz all around, some of it in piles. The building may have burned at some point, as some of the few remaining structural beams are burned. It appears that the rebar within the concrete was cut, suggesting the the building was professionally demolished, as opposed to just being abandoned and left to the elements.
It could have been a factory, a power station, a mine, a tranfer point... who knows.
I surfed the 'net looking for clues, but got nothing. Anybody know what it might have been?

Not sure what that is; I've never noticed it but then I don't travel that route often. Find a copy of John Robinson's book, "Hiking the San Bernardinos." That may be the best place to look. I have a copy but don't seem to be able to find it. Good luck.

Thanks, Jim... say, my brother Peter says that he knows you from the school that you teach at... your name always catches my attention, as I have a cousin that shares your name...
