Current situation: Today firefighters are going to be focusing on constructing the remaining piece of fireline as well as securing and mopping-up the existing containment line. Evacuations, Closures and Road Status: Highway 2 and highway 138 are open, however the public should use caution due to the presence of fire equipment traveling on the roads. Current situation: Firefighters
continued line construction operations
today and made good progress.
Throughout the day, interior, unburned
vegetation was consumed and produced
some smoke columns but no fire spread
was noted to the perimeter of the
fire. Aircraft made multiple water
drops and transported firefighters to
the fire’s edge throughout the day to
complete containment lines.
Temperatures remained cool and the wind
was mild during the day. Mop-up of the
fire will occur this evening to secure
and hold the fireline. Full
containment of the fire has been moved
back to Saturday, October 10, due to
accessing difficult terrain on the
southwest edge of the fire.
Evacuations, Closures and Road Status:
Highway 2 has been reopened and the
evacuation order for the community of
Wrightwood has been lifted. Both
evacuation centers in Victorville and
Rialto have been closed as residents
have returned home. Lone Pine Road

Current situation: The Sheep Fire
started near Sheep Canyon Road near
Lytle Creek at about 2:11 pm on
Saturday October 3, 2009. It burned
northeast to Swarthout Canyon Road,
then northwest up Lone Pine Canyon.
Most recent mapping has resulted in a
decrease in overall acres burned.
Firefighters are continuing to
construct fireline and mop-up hot
spots. The fires edge was 3/10 of a
mile from Wrightwood but was halted by
firefighters efforts. Although the
weather forecast looks favorable, dry
conditions still exist in the fire area
and 19 miles of containment line remain
incomplete. A combined air and ground
attack will be used today to achieve a
containment date of Thursday, October
8th.
Evacuations, Closures and Road Status:
Mandatory evacuations are still in
place for all Wrightwood residents.
Lytle Creek Road is open for residents
only. Lone Pine Road will remain
closed until further notice. Highway
138 is now open, but the public is
encouraged to be alert due to fire
crews and equipment using the road for
operations. The Pacific Crest trail is

Crews are constructing and improving direct handlines, engines and crews are providing for structure protection in Wrightwood. Firefighters have made excellent progress on the leading edge of the fire holding it 3/10 mile short of Wrightwood. Weather has aided efforts with higher humidity and very little wind. Engines will continue structure protection and ground resources will mop-up and construct line throughout the night.
08:56 AM
Tue 10/6
From: Inciweb 8:45 a.m.
The Sheep Fire started near Sheep Canyon Road near Lytle Creek at about 2:11 pm on Saturday October 3, 2009. It burned northeast to Swarthout Canyon Road, then northwest up Lone Pine Canyon. 5 structures were destroyed in the Lone Pine and Swarthout Canyon areas along with vehicles, RVs and heavy equipment. The fire burned to near the top of Lone Pine Canyon near Wrightwood about 3/10 of a mile from Wrightwood homes. Firefighters have been successful in keeping the fire from burning into Wrightwood. Numerous helitankers and fixed wing air tankers have dropped water and retardant on the fire and back fires have been set to protect homes at the eastern edge of Wrightwood. Engines will continue to do structure protection and ground resources will mop-up and construct line.
The Sheep Fire is 32% contained. When referring to a fire, the difference between a fire being contained or controlled can be unclear. When a fire is contained a fuel break has been completed around the fire manually by hand line, and/or mechanically by dozer line. These breaks may also include the use of natural barriers such as rocky outcroppings. When a fire is controlled, it has been extinguished completely, including hot spots. When a fire has been controlled, the fireline is secure enough so that flare-ups within the fire perimeter will not break through the line. Therefore, just because a line is contained does not mean that the fire is controlled.
Mandatory evacuations are still in place for Wrightwood, Swarthout Canyon, Lone Pine Canyon and for the following areas in Lytle Creek: Applewhite Campground, Applewhite Picnic Area, and areas east of Lytle Creek Road up to and including Mountain Lakes RV Park. Evacuation Centers are located at Eisenhower High School in Rialto and at Victorville Fairgrounds.
Road Closures: Hwy 138, between I-15 and Hwy 2, is now open. This does not effect Wrightwood residents, Hwy 2 remains closed. Lone Pine Canyon Road and Swarthout Canyon Road also remain closed. Lytle Creek Road is open to residents with ID only.
